The Institute of Electrochemistry, which was founded on October 1, 2012 at Clausthal University of Technology with founding director Professor Frank Endres, has set itself the task of researching the elementary physical-chemical principles of electrochemistry. From the end of 2018, a research brewery was also successively established at the institute, in which special aspects of brewing have been the focus of research ever since.
In the field of electrochemistry, the institute has specialized in researching ionic liquids, which, due to their negligible vapour pressures at room temperature and their wide electrochemical windows (of up to 6 volts), allow the investigation of physico-chemical processes that are inconceivable in classic solvents or electrolytes. For example, fundamental electrochemistry can be carried out under ultra-high vacuum conditions to understand unusual double layer effects and elementary deposition processes on electrodes, new nanostructured materials such as metal and semiconductor nanowires can be produced and investigated, and ionic liquids in the technical field allow the coating of complicated materials such as magnesium alloys or high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels with zinc and/or aluminum without the risk of hydrogen embrittlement. We offer service measurements for the spectroscopic and microscopic characterization of surfaces.
